Yamaha YST-FSW150 Subwoofer

The Yamaha YST-FSW150 subwoofer is a horizontally oriented sub that is situated as a short sub of only 6 inches in height. Low-profile subwoofers are starting to really take off in this aesthetics-driven marketplace. Since consumers are often attempting to match their new flat panel displays with equally sleek-looking speakers, the pursuit of low-profile subwoofers is becoming a new trend.
With an included accessory stand, the YST-FSW150 can also be positioned vertically. This kind of flexibility makes the Yamaha YST-FSW150 an attractive choice for those attempting to place a subwoofer into cramped quarters or achieve an otherwise small footprint.
The 6-1/2 inch driver is down-firing and controlled by Yamaha's Active Servo Technology -- which serves to cancel out impedance for a more consistent linear output. The front of the speaker features a large flared port along with the power button and volume control. This particular configuration means that the YSY-FSW150 can actually be placed within a cabinet. This is not something we encourage, but a placement technique that is common enough to warrant mention. Yamaha included a "system connection terminal" which is simply for use with their YSP Sound Projector models so that the subwoofer can be triggered on and off with the system.
We eagerly, though skeptically, fired up the YST-FSW150. Our expectations were low due to the small size of the driver and the relatively low power output of the subwoofer. We set up our listening session in a small room, roughly 10 x 12, with 8 foot ceilings. In sampling some movie material, such as the extensive bombing sequence in "Pearl Harbor," we found the YSY-FSW150 to be quite good at delivering substantial, tactile bass. The sub actually transferred some rumble to our seated position and caused us to reconsider our initial impressions of this small sub.
Further listening revealed some limitations of the unit -- mostly in terms of output level and its "finicky" nature in terms of placement, however we really enjoyed the sound. For music the sub didn't do quite as well, but at lower levels it actually sounded musical. When driven harder the YST-FSW150 seemed to get a tad one-notey and lose its definition. At most times, we actually kept the volume control near the top, and varied the output of our bass-managed AV receiver to send the right amount of signal to the sub.
The YST-FSW150 delivers a big sound in a small box. To us, that's actually one of the top goals. It's not as tight as some more expensive units that work in sealed enclosure designs, but its output is clean and consistent. For those with larger rooms we'd recommend something with a larger driver and higher power output. For consumers who need an inexpensive subwoofer that will deliver good sound in a small environment, we'd highly recommend the FSW150.
Pros: Front port makes it flexible to position, remarkably tight bass
Cons: Not suitable for larger rooms
