Yamaha YST-FSW100 subwoofer
Date Published: 8/25/06
The Yamaha YST-FSW100 subwoofer does not look like your typical powered subwoofer. It has a compact cabinet with a light-colored finish, yet it can still produce an impactful sound. The YST-FSW100's slim and elegant appearance is designed to complement plasma and other flat television monitors, and the size and shape open up a host of placement possibilities unavailable to traditionally boxy subwoofers.
The YST-FSW100 is only 6-3/16 inches deep, so it can be placed along the same wall as a monitor without getting in the way. Magnetic shielding lets you locate the subwoofer close to the television without causing picture distortion.
The 6-1/2-inch driver is not very substantial, but for times when style must preside over function, it should be adequate. The built-in amplifier provides 75 watts (average) of power, and the YST-FSW100 uses an innovative Half Pipe port design that provides the sonic benefits of a ported enclosure in a smaller space. The frequency response of the YST-FSW100 is 30Hz to 200Hz.
The environmentally conscious will be pleased to know that the YST-FSW100 has no potentially toxic internal parts, and it is uses lead-free circuit boards. While not a very large or powerful subwoofer, the YST-FSW100 is still a good deal for the price, and it might keep the peace with the designer of the household.
