The Yamaha YSP-1000 Digital Sound Projector is a unique home theater speaker system that offers an untraditional solution to the problem many people face when designing a home theater. Instead of a variety of separate speaker components that must be located around a listening space, the YSP-1000 is a single unit that contains all the speakers in a wide yet relatively compact cabinet.

The YSP-1000 features an amazing 42 drivers, each powered by its own channel of amplification. With Yamaha's IntelliBeam Automated Calibration System and the included microphone, the YSP-1000 can be placed just about anywhere in a room. There's no need to run cables every which way, and there are no unsightly speaker cabinets to ruin your interior decorator's vision for your home.

The 40 (yes, 40!) midrange drivers measure only 1-5/8 inches each, so you can imagine them all lined up inside the single cabinet. To round out the sound, there is also a pair of 4-3/8-inch woofers. The integrated amplifier provides a total of 120 watts of power, with 20 watts going to each woofer and 2 watts to each of the 40 midranges. For the best sound, we recommend adding an external subwoofer via the included subwoofer output.

As you might imagine, such a configuration requires some advanced signal processing, and Yamaha includes it right in the cabinet. It has built-in processing for Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS Neo:6 and Dolby Pro Logic II. There is a room equalizer, as well as separate bass, treble and tone controls. For incoming audio signals, the YSP-1000 has optical and coaxial digital audio inputs, as well as a pair of analog audio inputs and the subwoofer output. This speaker system can also perform video switching, as it has two component video inputs and one composite video output. A subdued blue LCD display on the front panel offers information regarding processing mode and volume.

While it can't compete with a true multichannel, multispeaker system, the YSP-1000 does provide a convincing sound with surprising depth. The YSP-1000 is more than a box of speakers, proving that this home theater speaker system isn't just a gimmick.
