Yamaha NS-SP7800PN
Date Published: 3/14/08With its elegant looks, low cost, and small footprint, the Yamaha NS-SP7800PN offers a complete home theater package that will surely please even the most discerning of spouses.
This 5.1 system is a smart buy for those situations where great looks are just as important as price. The system includes a pair of slim two-way floorstanding ported speakers, a pair of satellite speakers, one two-way center-channel speaker and a sleek, low-profile subwoofer utilizing Yamaha's Advanced YST II (Yamaha Active Servo Technology II) technology. They are all finished with a high gloss piano black finish that will blend well with many flat panel displays currently on the market. All of the speakers are magnetically shielded as well.
The speakers all contain dual 2-1/4-inch paper cone woofers and 3/4-inch silk dome tweeters. The sub-woofer contains a 6-1/2-inch woofer and is powered by a 130-watt amplifier. The front left and right speakers have a round base that does well to not interfere with the minimalist looks of the system. The front-firing ports are mounted low so there should be very little noticeable port noise, even though these speakers seemed to be tuned a tad lower than we recommend for optimal sound. On the back of the satellites are spring clip type terminals and threaded mounting holes for easily mounting them to a wall, or even an angled ceiling bracket such as those available from B-Tech.
The overall sound of the system was clear, well-matched, and balanced. The sub performed surprisingly well for such a small driver. However, due to the small driver size in all the speakers, we only recommend this system for smaller rooms. The speakers are similar to others in this price range, but the silk dome tweeters give an added quality not found on some other systems in this class.
In situations where ultimate performance is not the main goal and high aesthetic value is important, the Yamaha NS-SP7800PN fills the need nicely. One could spend twice the amount on a cube type speaker system and get much worse performance. Most systems in this price range look their budget, but we think this one stands out in front of the pack because of its elegant design and looks. People will think you spent a lot, but we will know different, and your secret is safe with us.
Pros: Nice looking system, sub has small footprint
Cons: Average performance, very small drivers
