Date Published: 1/8/08
Yamaha's DVX-S650 CinemaStation is a multifunctional home theater system that comes with a fine collection of speakers. In addition to progressive scan DVD-Video playback, this five-channel package is compatible with high-resolution DVD-Audio and SACD. It can also play MP3 and WMA digital audio files burned to disc.
The front speakers utilize a two-way design, and each has a substantial 6-1/2-inch woofer and a 3/4-inch dome tweeter. The center channel uses a pair of 3-inch woofers and the same 3/4-inch dome tweeter, while the surround satellites have a 3-inch woofer and a 1/2-inch tweeter. All of the speakers are placed in bass reflex cabinets, and they are magnetically shielded to avoid interfering with a television. The included 8-inch subwoofer provides a frequency response of 28Hz to 200Hz.
The DVX-S650's main unit pushes 55 watts into five channels, while the subwoofer amplifier offers an additional 130 watts. There is built-in processing for DTS, Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II, with 192kHz/24-bit audio conversion. There are also 12 digital signal-processing modes. In addition to the progressive scan component video output, the DVX-S650 has S-video and composite video outputs, a pair of audio inputs and an optical digital audio input.
The DVX-S650 has Yamaha's YPAO audio calibration system, and it includes a microphone to sample room acoustics. The system then automatically adjusts speaker levels and delays to provide optimal playback. Combined with its extensive disc compatibility and impressive array of speakers, the DVX-650 offers a rewarding home theater experience.
