Yamaha DVX-C300 Universal Home Theater System
Date Published: 1/8/08
It would be hard to find a better value than the Yamaha DVX-C300 home theater system. This five-channel package has a five-disc changer that offers progressive scan DVD playback, and it is compatible with the high-resolution audio formats of DVD-Audio and SACD. In addition, the DVX-C300 can play recordable CD loaded with MP3 and WMA digital audio files, and it is compatible with JPEG and DivX. While one disc is playing, any of the non-playing discs can be exchanged without interrupting the music or movie.
The DVX-C300 provides a total of 900 watts of power. The system's amplifier sends 150 watts to each of the five main channels, and the subwoofer has its own 150-watt amplifier. It has built-in processing for DTS, Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II, and it includes 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog conversion for a quality audio signal.
The matched speaker complement uses a two-way design to convey the clarity of high-resolution DVD-Audio and SACD playback. Each satellite has a 2-inch midrange driver and a 1/2-inch tweeter, while the center-channel speaker adds a second midrange driver. All of the speakers are magnetically shielded for placement near a television. The powered subwoofer has an 8-inch driver.
The audio response of the DVX-C300 is good, but it lacks some bass punch in certain situations. Nevertheless, for an affordable home theater system with universal playback capabilities, the DVX-C300 is an excellent value.
Pros: Great disc compatibility, five-disc changer, affordable
Cons: Average audio quality, occasionally weak bass response
