Yamaha CDC-685
Date Published: 5/12/08
The CDC-685 from Yamaha is a stepped-up version of their CDC-585. They're both wonderful changers, but the CDC-685 might have a few more features that you find necessary.
Like the CDC-585, it's a five-disc changer that you can change the four discs that aren't playing. It's also CD-R/RW capable, CD Text capable, and completely programmable. They both feature CD synchro start with compatible Yamaha cassette decks, as well as peak and index search.
The CDC-685 adds a ten-key track and five-key disc access keypad to the front panel--this great feature, lets you control the machine without relying on the remote. The most touted advantage that the CDC-685 has is infrared I/O ports, which make this changer ideal for a custom installation. Another superior feature is the remote controllable digital volume control that also controls the level to the headphones; the CDC-685 has a front-panel headphone jack.
Yamaha's CDC-685 has just enough added features to make it worth the slight increase in price. Looking at it for its own merits, the CDC-685 is a great changer, with the great sound quality that Yamaha is known for.
