Xerox WorkCentre PE120

Date Published: 3/27/07

When you think of high-end office machines, Xerox is one of the manufacturers that comes to mind. Most of Xerox's multifunction devices are extremely large, powerful units that don't fit in the desktop category. But the company has a few machines that will fit on your desk and will provide high-end features, including the WorkCentre PE120 laser multifunction device.

The WorkCentre PE120's print function runs at speeds up to 22 ppm in draft mode, and it offers a 600x600 dpi resolution, which is standard for a laser printer. The WorkCentre PE120 cannot print in color, though.

The copier function also runs at maximum speeds of 22 ppm. You can resize the original at between 25 and 400 percent, which is standard for multifunction devices in this price range. The glass-top surface is handy for making single copies.

The WorkCentre PE120's fax function can send documents at speeds up to 20 ppm. For multi-page faxes, you'll appreciate this device's 50-sheet automatic document feeder. And the unit's scanner function works in both monochrome and full color, with a maximum optical scan resolution of 600x1200 dpi. Overall, the unit's scanning function could run faster and yield sharper images.

The "extra" features make the WorkCentre PE120 stand out, however. It starts with a large 250-sheet paper tray, but a second, 50-sheet tray allows you to make use of specialty paper. And you can purchase a third, 250-sheet paper tray for the WorkCentre PE120. The unit offers 32MB of memory initially, but you can add another 128MB of memory later. Unfortunately, the WorkCentre PE120 doesn't offer any Ethernet connectivity, which is an odd omission in this price range.

Finally, the WorkCentre PE120 can run up to 15,000 prints per month, which makes it an impressive workhorse. The biggest drawback to the WorkCentre PE120 is its suggested price. This unit is pretty large at 37 pounds, and it is a bit noisier than its smaller counterparts, but that's part of the trade-off for obtaining the high-end features found in the WorkCentre PE120.
