Whistler 1788 Battery Powered Radar Detector

Date Published: 1/9/08

The Whistler 1788 is a radar detector capable of detecting all types of radar currently in use by police. This includes both K- and Ka-band POP radar. Most importantly, it's capable of operating completely cordless.

For less than $200, the Whistler 1788 is a full-featured radar detector that operates on four high-power Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) AA batteries. This large battery pack allows the unit to operate more efficiently, without a duty cycle which can reduce the effectiveness of a cordless detector.

Upon first glance, we were taken in by the unit's attractive design. The 1788 features chrome buttons set upon a titanium-colored top. The rest of the unit is housed in an all black casing. In addition, the large LCD display, with subtle blue backlighting, adds to the unit's visual appeal.

As for installation, the cordless nature of the 1788 allowed us to mount the detector in locations not always within reach of a standard 12-volt plug. The unit comes with windshield suction mounts, as well as dash mounts. We put ours on the dash, making sure the detector had a clear view of the road ahead. After installing the unit, we hit the road.

Surprisingly, the Whistler 1788 performed up to par with several corded detectors we had recently reviewed. The unit alerted us of X, K, and KA bands, in addition to laser radar. The unit also features three city modes (standard, low X-band radar sensitivity and X-band delete) and a highway mode. Each mode controls the level of sensitivity of the unit.

As for additional features, the 1788 includes volume control, a mute button, a signal strength indicator with both numerical and graphical displays, as well as the ability to adjust the backlight on the unit's display. In addition, it comes with a setting saver feature which remembered our custom settings when we accidentally powered off the unit during one of our trips.

In general, we were impressed with this cordless detector. We did find that the battery life somewhat limited. We had to charge the unit after several hours of solid use. Fortunately, this unit comes with a built-in battery charger and a home charger.

We recommend the Whistler 1788 to those seeking a cordless detector at a reasonable price. You'll get more than your money's worth with this little unit.

Pros: Cordless, Attractive Design, Dependable Detection
Cons: Heavy, Must recharge batteries often, Replacement batteries expensive

The Whistler 1788 stay on 100% of the time for total radar and laser protection. Other cordless units go into a "sleep mode" to save on battery life which cuts down on performance. The Whistler 1788 has rechargeable batteries and a built in battery charger so it does not need a "sleep...
