Whirlpool WTW5500S top-loading washer

Date Published: 5/25/07

With a modest price-tag and an ample 3.2-cubic-foot capacity, the Whirlpool WTW5500S is so well-featured, it has earned itself a Best Buy designation. The only Whirlpool washers with larger capacities are the far more expensive, agitator-free Cabrio models.

The Whirlpool WTW5500S top-loading washer comes equipped with features that American shoppers want: a two-speed motor that is gentle enough for delicates and tough enough for heavy-duty loads. It has dispensers for bleach and fabric softener, and the option of an extra-rinse. It also has an unusual fourth temperature option. Instead of just hot, warm or cold, the WTW5500S offers an option of a cool wash as well. Perfect for colors and permanent press, the cool wash protects your fabrics from damaging heat and doesn't leave them ice cold. As a result, they will spend far less time in the dryer than their chilly counterparts.

Although respectable in the energy consumptions department, Whirlpool's WTW5500S doesn't meet the Energy Star requirements. It has an energy guide rating of 421 kWh/yr, which is not the equivalent of a high-efficiency model, but for this price range it is not too bad. A desirable four-level water selection dial helps control water usage. This dial allows you to manually determine the amount of water the machine uses in a load. For most efficient water usage, match the water level to the size of each load. Resist allowing the tub to fill completely, unless the washer is completely full with clothing.

Ten cycles and four speed combinations will give you the flexibility to wash just about anything your family owns. Without costing a small fortune, Whirlpool's WTW5500S combines the most desirable features with moderate energy usage to land itself a Best Buy rating in the standard top-loading washer category.

Pros: Offers unique cool wash setting, two-speed motor for delicates, four water levels, extra rinse option, fabric softener and bleach dispensers
Cons: Lacks warm rinse, moderate energy usage
