Whirlpool WTW5300S top-loading washer

Date Published: 5/25/07

With three wash and spin speed options, the top-loading Whirlpool WTW5300S makes a good choice for those who are willing to pay a bit extra for a washer that will treat delicate fabrics in a more gentle manner. Single speed washers are effective for durable fabrics, but the three-speed action of this washer is a better choice for those who plan to wash swimwear, lingerie and lightweight fine fabrics in the machine.

Equipped with seven cycles, the WTW5300S once again offers better options for loads that contain permanent fabrics and delicates. These options provide the slower spins that resist wrinkling and prevent damage to sensitive fibers.

More versatile than some lower priced units, this Whirlpool washer provides a choice of three water levels to allow you to better match load size to water usage. While not as effective as the high-efficiency models, the feature on this model is certainly a better option in terms of water usage than a machine without this feature that fills the entire tub for each load, regardless of size.

Like most models in this price range, the WTW5300S gives you a choice of three wash temperatures -- hot, warm or cold -- all with a cold water rinse. You will need to step up to a higher-priced model if you would like to add the option of an extra rinse or a rinse that uses warm water; having an extra rinse will allow you to better remove detergent residue, while a warm water rinse can dramatically reduce the time a load requires in the dryer.

We particularly liked the quick wash option on the WTW5300S. This option runs a small, light load quickly and is the perfect solution to a forgotten sports uniform or a favorite pair of jeans that missed the full load. The bleach dispenser is yet another added feature that we liked. If you plan to use bleach, we feel this is the only way to do it. Otherwise, you will find yourself waiting for the tub to fill and the bleach to mix in before you can add clothing.

Although not as efficient as a more expensive Energy Star rated product, this top-loading washer offers a water level control that minimizes water usage. With three wash and spin speeds, a quick wash and a bleach dispenser, the Whirlpool WTW5300S has some minimal convenience features that cost about $100 or so more than the price of the absolute cheapest washer you're likely to find.

Pros: Three wash and spin speeds handle permanent press and delicates, bleach dispenser, three water level options
Cons: Uses lots of water and energy, lacks warm rinse/extra rinse
