Basic features, paired with few unexpected extras, grace the entry-level Whirlpool WTW5100S top-loading washer. A simple machine, this model has a number of useful settings that are determined by how you set the dial. Choose your cycles based on fabric type and desired wash/rinse temperatures and this washer will alter the run-time accordingly.

A good choice for those who wash primarily durable fabrics, this machine offers just one wash and one spin speed. Setting the machine for different loads simply changes the amount of time a cycle runs--not how rigorously the agitator pulses or at how many rpm a spin cycle moves. For this reason, delicate fabrics and hand washables will not fare well in the WTW5100S. The cycles are rigorous enough to cause damage to temperamental wools, silks and delicately constructed fabrics.

Despite the fact that the WTW5100S doesn't handle fine fabrics well, there are many things we do like about this model. The ability to add a soak before washing is a great feature for stained clothing and ground-in dirt you may find on your kid's socks. We like that you can add extra spin to remove residual moisture and thus speed drying times. The quick wash is also a great plus. With this setting, it's easy to wash an item you need in a hurry without waiting for the usual longer cycle. We also like that we can choose from two water levels. You can either fill the tub for a full load or select the lesser water level for a half-full tub. Although this is not as efficient as the multiple water level options of more expensive models, it certainly is a welcome energy and cost savings tool.

The three water temperatures on the WTW5100S allow you to wash in hot, warm or cold -- the only options you need for everything you machine wash. Rinsing is limited to cold water, which is the least expensive option for a washer. Items rinsed in cold, however, take longer and cost more to dry than items rinsed in warm water. If cost and use of electricity are of concern to you, consider a machine with a warm rinse option or opt for good old-fashioned air-drying.

Among the most affordable washing machines we've reviewed, Whirlpool's top-loading WTW5100S keeps it simple, while offering enough variety for everything except the most delicate items. If you don't mind its fairly high consumption of water and energy and are willing to wash your delicates by hand, consider Whirlpool's WTW5100S for its bargain basement price.
