Whirlpool WED5500S / WGD5500S dryer

Whoever said you can't buy a good dryer for less than $400 hasn't seen Whirlpool's WED5500S (electric)/WGD5500S (gas) dryer. A traditional model, this dryer does not have the new technology of the more expensive models. But it does dry clothes as well as any dryer that has been around for more than just a few years.
With a fairly large capacity of 6.5 cubic feet, this model can certainly handle the needs of a growing family. It offers a choice of four temperatures and has seven built-in cycles that are controlled thermostatically. The Wrinkle Shield cycle extends tumbling for 40 minutes after completion, while the Tumble-Press cycle adds a cool down period to prevent wrinkling of permanent press fabrics.
The major feature this low-priced dryer lacks is a sensor that can monitor dryness levels. Without a sensor, clothing is far more prone to the shrinkage and damage caused by over-drying. We certainly prefer a dryer with a sensor, but adding one can easily bump the price up $100 or more.
Unlike many new models, the WED5500S/WGD5500S has a drop-down door. You'll want to ensure you have sufficient clearance so the door opens fully. This model is convenient enough to load, and you will get some assistance from the interior drum light.
This dryer is equipped with a top-mounted lint screen, which means you won't be able to see it when it's full. To prevent clogging and slowing of the cycles, you will have to remember to empty it after each load is completed. At cycle's end, this model signals you that the load is done. If you wish you can turn this buzzer off, so as not to wake a napping child.
With the new-style laundry washer/dryer pairs gaining so much attention, traditional units such as this one can be purchased at some very attractive prices. Whirlpool's WED5500S/WGD5500S would likely have cost a fair amount more just a few short years ago.
