Whirlpool Over-the-Range Convection Microwave Velos GH7208XR

Date Published: 11/10/06

Whirlpool has a number of over-the-range Speedcook microwave ovens to choose from, but the oversized Velos GH7208XR is the best of the bunch. This technologically advanced over-the-range model offers excellent ventilation and four outstanding and convenient cooking methods: microwave, convection, speedcook and steam.

Convection is the function that sets this model apart from the other Whirlpool models. Well worth the added expense, convection adds a fan to the unit for circulating hot air. The convection setting is ideal for baking and allows you to use this unit as a second oven. Convection-circulated heat can be combined with microwave energy to speed cooking while browning and crisping foods. Ideal for breads and cakes, combination cooking can also work wonders with casseroles and breaded chicken breasts. Foods that require a crisp surface cook in 1/2 to 2/3 of the time required in a conventional oven, thanks to this combination setting.

Speedcooking can shave 40 percent off cooking times and is yet another way to cook in this model. This method uses quartz and halogen light technology and is the method of choice for grilling steaks and roasting poultry and large cuts of meat.

Of all the methods that the Velos GH7208XR offers, the one you'll probably use most is microwaving. Great for all kinds of reheating and preparing vegetables and soups, this model includes a sensor that handles most programming for you. With this sensor, you'll never have to guess how long to heat an item. Just select the food from the listed categories and the oven handles all the settings for you, regardless of portion size.

As an added bonus, this microwave oven comes with a Tupperware-patented SureMist steamer. The SureMist steamer is the same product available separately from Tupperware. In this Whirlpool oven it's used for beautifully steamed vegetables, seafoods and rice.

Although the speedcook setting and the steamer are convenient additions to the product, the microwave and convection settings are the real workhorses of this unit. You could opt for a Velos model without convection, but we don't know why you would want that. Spend a few dollars more on the Velos GH7208XR and get the added benefit of microwave-convection combination.

Pros: Offers multiple ways to cook, you can select the best method for the food being prepared, excellent ventilation
Cons: Oversized unit may be challenging to install
