Whirlpool MH3184XP over-the-range microwave oven

Date Published: 1/16/08

The Whirlpool MH3184XP over-the-range microwave oven offers plenty for the price. Even though it's Whirlpool's least expensive model, it offers a high-quality sensor -- a feature that's not often found on budget models.

This sensor provides a fool-proof way to complete microwave cooking. Using a microprocessor, this sensor measures humidity in foods to determine when they are done. It's a far more accurate way to cook than simply guessing at proper times. And even better, this system works regardless of the number of servings you place in the oven.

Since the ventilation hood on this model is a fairly anemic 175 CFM (cubic feet per minute), we would reserve it for use over electric ranges and cooktops. For standard output gas ranges, it is minimally acceptable. If you will be installing a high-output gas cooktop, we would recommend you select another microwave.

Fairly typical of models in this price range, the MH3184XP offers an auto defrost, a single light for the cooking surface, dishwasher safe filters and 1000 watts of cooking power. With an interior of 1.8 cubic feet, its capacity is about average for the category. Additional, less common features include a keep warm cycle and a ventilation fan with four speeds.

In most installations, this 30-inch over-the-range model is more than sufficient. Its sensor sets it apart from the crowd, but its low-level ventilation hood may not suffice in some instances. If good looks and cooking performance outweigh the need for powerful ventilation, Whirlpool's budget-priced MH3184XP may make very good sense. It comes in stainless steel, black or white.

Pros: Value-priced microwave oven with sensor
Cons: Low powered ventilation hood
