Whirlpool GR2SHWXPQ Top-Freezer Refrigerator
Date Published: 1/10/08
With its stylish contoured doors and large collection of convenience features, the Whirlpool GR2SHWXPQ is one of the most upscale top-freezer refrigerators we've seen. In fact, this medium-sized model has just about every convenience feature possible.
One of the best features is the GR2SHWXPQ's through-the-door filtered water dispenser. The paddle-type dispenser sits in a recess about 1-1/2 inches deep. It's quite easy to use, although you will have to tilt tall glasses and pitchers in order to fill them. A night light automatically comes on when the kitchen is dark, and a lock-out feature prevents little hands from accidentally spilling water on the floor. The dispenser is self-contained in the door, unlike most through-the-door ice and water dispensers found on side-by-side refrigerator models.
The conveniences don't end there. The GR2SHWXPQ's refrigerator door has one fixed shelf and three gallon-sized adjustable door bins, plus a clear dairy compartment. The bins all have handles, so you can remove them from the fridge and take them to the table to act as condiment baskets. The bins also sport nifty blue mats that steady jars and bottles, and the mats can be easily removed for cleaning in the dishwasher.
The GR2SHWXPQ's main refrigerator compartment is home to a pair of clear humidity-controlled crispers, a clear snack drawer and four half-width tempered-glass shelves with spill-saver lips. The freezer has a tilt-out door bin to help you easily find frozen items, and the main compartment has a shelf and pull-out floor panel. An automatic ice maker and bucket are included.
One feature that isn't up to par with the rest of the GR2SHWXPQ's upscale offerings is the thermostat, which is a manual knob instead of a sophisticated digital/LED readout unit. On a top-freezer refrigerator at this price point, we would expect digital controls. To its credit, however, the GR2SHWXPQ's thermostat is conveniently located at the front top of the refrigerator compartment, and it is simple to adjust.
The GR2SHWXPQ has a total of 21.7 cubic feet of storage space, including 15.2 cubic feet in the refrigerator compartment. This top-freezer model is relatively energy-efficient, costing about $41 to operate annually at today's electricity rates. The GR2SHWXPQ is available in white, black, stainless steel and Satina, which has the look of stainless steel without the maintenance requirements.
The Whirlpool GR2SHWXPQ is a great top-freezer refrigerator, and when you consider the long list of convenience and performance features, it proves to be a good value as well.
Pros: Long list of convenience and performance features, through-the-door water dispenser, stylish contoured door design, good value
