Whirlpool GC5SHEXN built-in refrigerator

Date Published: 8/11/05

One look at this commanding 24.5-cubic-foot side-by-side built-in refrigerator and you'll be impressed by its good looks and great features. The Whirlpool GC5SHEXN is a super choice for a built-in side-by-side, if you're looking for a model with all the bells and whistles that has sufficient capacity to hold food for a large family--and hold it in style. This model has 14.9 cubic feet of room in the main compartment and 9.6 cubic feet of freezer space. It requires only 607 kWh of energy each year to run it, so you'll pay about $50 annually in energy costs for this model. Step inside and you'll see a very well-designed interior that gives your foods maximum visibility and accessibility. There are three adjustable, slide-out glass shelves with a spillsaver feature, plus one stationary shelf. There is one adjustable-humidity vegetable crisper, a temperature-controlled meat pan, and a third bin that can hold snacks and cheeses as well as your eggs. A rack that holds one bottle of wine or other beverage rounds out the interior features. The door is equally well-featured with five bins--two wide enough to hold gallon-size containers, two which can hold liter-size bottles--plus a clear dairy keeper. The door also has a nifty bottom shelf made specifically to hold cans and is chilled by air channeled from the freezer. You'll be impressed with the amount of space in the freezer section, and how that space is laid out. Because the ice maker/water dispenser, which operates through an integral filter, is entirely located on the door, there is room in the main freezer compartment for two slide-out wire storage baskets, one fixed basket, two adjustable shelves, and two stationary shelves. The door has three shelves/bins (two that tilt out) in addition to the ice maker, which has a novel design that allows you to remove the stored ice in the integral ice bucket. The Whirlpool GC5SHEXN comes in a choice of colors, including white, biscuit, black, or stainless steel with black ($2,699).
