Whirlpool Front-Load WED9400S / WGD9400S dryer

Date Published: 3/13/08

The Whirlpool Front-Load WED9400S (electric)/WGD9400S (gas) dryer is part of the manufacturer's best-selling, front-load washer-dryer pairs, and one reason for this may be because it offers the AccerlerCare drying system that conveniently matches dry time to wash time for most loads. Finally, there's a dryer that dries fast enough to put an end to laundry backup.

In addition to adding speed to the laundry room, this sophisticated Whirlpool model offers just about every feature a high-end dryer could possibly include. A superior capacity of 7.0 cubic feet and an excellent moisture sensor are top priorities, and as we anticipated, they are onboard along with much more. Five temperatures provide one that's just right for every fabric, while 10 programmed cycles give special care to fabrics such as cottons, delicates and permanent press. We particularly like the setting that extends the tumble cycle to prevent wrinkling, and also highly approve of the accuracy of the cycles and how they work to reduce shrinkage and other forms of heat damage on clothes.

The accuracy of this model is due at least partly to the controls. They are quite sophisticated and combine a rotary dial with a number of electronic components. Although it seems a bit unnecessary, the WED9400S/WGD9400S even offers audio feedback and instructional help controls.

One concern we do have about this product is the complexity of its electronics. Although not as prone to problems and repairs as the new washers, this dryer does contain a fairly sophisticated set of electronics that can potentially need repair at some point. However, the performance of this model is far superior to the old-style models.

Since this unit measures just 38 inches in height, we recommend purchasing the optional pedestal. This addition will make loading and unloading the dryer a lot easier on your back. Unfortunately, buying the pedestal can add up to $200 to an already very high-priced dryer.

Last but not least, one of the biggest selling points is the incredibly appealing design of this dryer, especially when paired with its matching washer. If the laundry room is the one place in your home that still needs a facelift -- then Whirlpool's WED9400S/WGD9400S, which comes in a few choices of designer colors, is definitely the model for you.

Pros: Beautiful design, provides unsurpassed care for clothing
Cons: Expensive, adding costly pedestal is recommended
