Whirlpool Duet Sport Model Dryer WED8300S / WGD8300S
Date Published: 3/13/08
The WED8300S (electric)/WGD8300S (gas) is the Sport version of Whirlpool's popular Duet front-loading dryer. Equipped with a more stable suspension than the original Duet, the Sport model is designed to produce limited vibration when used in an upstairs location. Although the potential to vibrate and travel is really more of an issue with washers, both units in the matched pairs have been equipped with the upgraded suspension feature known as Smooth Balance. If you intend to place your new laundry pair upstairs, we highly recommend you opt for the Sport model dryer, not the regular Duet.
Other than an improved suspension system, the WED8300S/WGD8300S differs from the usual Whirlpool Duet dryer in two significant ways: capacity and price. In both instances, the Sport model is less -- as in less money and less capacity. Opt for the Sport model and you could save yourself $400 in comparison with a Duet steam model or about $150 when compared with a more basic version.
When it comes to capacity, the Sport offers a 6.7-cubic-foot interior. Although this makes it smaller than some comparable models, when it comes to day-to-day usage, the difference is really quite insignificant. It also offers five temperatures, nine cycles and a 90-minute extra tumble/wrinkle guard, all of which work quite well.
In reviewing the actual features of this model, we find the WED8300S/WGD8300S to be every bit deserving of the Duet appellation. Like all the Duet dryers, this Sport keeps pace with the washing machine -- drying most loads in the time it takes to wash one. It also offers Whirlpool's AccelerCare sensing system, which does an excellent job of monitoring loads and preventing heat damage.
Pros: Fast drying, solid suspension, priced right
Cons: Slightly smaller capacity than average front-loader
