Whirlpool Duet Sport Front-Loading Washer WFW8500S
Date Published: 5/9/07
A Whirlpool Duet washer with a slightly smaller capacity, the WFW8500S is the model you're looking for if you intend to install it upstairs or on a floor that lacks a concrete under pad. Referred to as the sport model, the WFW8500S like an automobile -- it offers an innovative shock absorber type system. This system eliminates much of the vibration that would otherwise be experienced in such an installation.
Like the more expensive Duet washers, the WFW8500S takes advantage of sensor technology to monitor water level and temperature. In fact, the sensor in the WFW8500S is the exact same 6th sense sensor that is used in the top-of-the-line Duet WFW9400. Although it is not clear in some of the Whirlpool literature, this is one factor that makes the WFW8500S a particularly good value.
Although the sensor is the same, not all the features of the higher-priced Duet models are included on the WFW8500S. This unit features 10 pre-set cycles instead of 14, four water temperature combinations instead of five, and a 6-hour delay timer in place of a 12-hour one. Although less versatile in some senses, the WFW8500S is an overall better value than the other Duets, unless you have a specific need for one of the pricier features.
A re-engineered model, the WFW8500S includes changes that may make it even more desirable than the higher-priced versions. In addition to the shock absorbing system, the WFW8500S has the new door lock and offers a clean-the-washer setting. This setting runs a hot cycle through the washer, removing detergent build-up in the basket and preventing the development of mold. So far, this solution to the nagging mold problem common to many front-loaders appears to be working splendidly.
The WFW8500S is a tiny bit smaller than the more expensive Duets, but only by a fraction, so don't let that influence your decision -- the size difference will not affect your capacity one bit. The difference is required to accommodate changes and improvements that will make your overall experience with this machine better than ever. You might also note that the WFW8500S has a tad less rpm to the maximum spin. Once again, this is not a concern; 100 rpm will have not much effect on your loads, while the improvements made on this redesigned model do nothing but add to its appeal.
According to Whirlpool, the Whirlpool Duet models are currently the best selling front-load washers in America and for good reason. Not perfect, but getting better all the time, the WFW8500S and future generations of high-efficiency front-loaders are likely to be part of the global movement to more energy-efficient appliances for a long time to come.
