Whirlpool Cabrio WTW6400S top-loading washer
Date Published: 5/25/07
The top-loading Whirlpool WTW6400S is one of this company's two Cabrio washers. Slightly less featured than top-of-the-line Cabrio WTW6600S, this model differs in three simple ways. First of all, it lacks the automated soak cycle that allows you to roll from a long soak time into a regular wash cycle without resetting the machine -- although it does have a prewash cycle. Secondly, the WTW6400S has a solid lid versus the step-up model's see-thru one. While auto-soak could be a concern, we seriously doubt you plan on standing by to watch your laundry go round -- but then again you never know. Certainly the see-thru lid doesn't affect performance. Lastly, this model comes in white only, while the WTW6600S is offered in white, biscuit or black.
Both machines feature a cavernous interior. With a wash plate instead of an agitator, this washer has an incredible amount of space that you can fill with the largest load of laundry you will probably ever do in one machine. The capacity is a full 4.5 cubic feet, the largest top-loader we've seen to date.
When it comes to cleaning, this washer can thoroughly and gently clean large, heavy loads, as well as delicates. In addition to cleaning power, this washer is also very convenient to load. Loading from the top is generally easier on the back and accounts for the long-standing popularity of top-loading washers in the United States -- at least until the last few years.
As much as convenience is important, so is efficiency. This model, although referred to as a high-efficiency washer, is not quite as water efficient as many of the newer front-loading washing machines -- even some that cost less. But, it is Energy Star rated and meets or beats the efficiency of just about all the other top-loading models.
Stain removal has also been addressed by this new model from Whirlpool. Using a new feature called Direct Inject wash system, the WTW6400S cuts down on the need for stain pre-treatment. Instead of having to pre-treat stains, this model showers concentrated detergent over clothing and the centrifugal force provided by the wash plate system works the detergent into the fabrics.
The first of the top-loaders to employ a "6th Sense" sensor system, this washer determines the wash time, water level, temperature setting and spin speeds based on the cycle selected. Never again will you need to explain hot, cold, warm and gentle cycles to kids learning to do laundry. One need only simply identify the load and the machine does the rest.
With 10 cycles and options, this model has features that are on par with other machines in this price range, although it does lack a delay timer. There are five wash/rinse combinations as well as four spin speeds offered on this model. Maximum spin speed is more than 1,000 rpm, which will ensure excellent moisture removal. Add-on options allow you to add a second rinse or an extra spin. Controls are electronic with a center knob.
Although the Whirlpool Cabrio WTW6400S top-loading washer is new and as yet unproven, it does offer an incredibly large capacity. It also operates quietly and is among the most efficient of the top-load selections. For the ultimate in clutter-free convenience and storage, consider pairing the WTW6400S with Whirlpool's matching laundry work-surface and vertical laundry tower.
