Whirlpool Cabrio Top-Load Washer WTW6600S
Date Published: 2/1/07
Whirlpool's Cabrio Top-Load Washer WTW6600S is very similar to Kenmore's high-efficiency elite Oasis washer. Identifiable by the see-through lids, these new top-loaders are Whirlpool-made and boast the ultimate in top-loading capacity. Cabrio's capacity equals Oasis's with a 4.5-cubic-foot interior and the ability to handle a load of up to 18 pounds. Currently one of the largest of any washers on the market, front-loader or top-loader, these models differ primarily in where they can be purchased.
Whirlpool's Cabrio is sold by independent retailers and big-box stores such as Lowe's. Kenmore's Oasis model is available only from Sears. Pricing is very similar. One major difference is in the price of extended warranties. While the washers will cost about the same regardless of where they are purchased, extended warranty plans can vary -- sometimes even by hundreds of dollars. If you plan on purchasing an extended warranty, which with a new unproven model such as this is recommended, be sure to shop carefully.
When it comes to cleaning, the claim appears to be true -- this washer can thoroughly and gently clean large heavy loads, just as well as it cleans delicates. In addition to cleaning power, this washer is also very convenient to load. Loading from the top is generally easier on the back and accounts for the long-standing popularity of top-loading washers in the United States -- at least until the last few years.
Just as convenience is important, so is efficiency. This model, although referred to as a high-efficiency washer, is not quite as water efficient as many of the newer front-loaders -- even some that cost less. But, it is Energy Star rated and meets or beats the efficiency of just about all the other top-load models. This washer's second most notable feature is its agitator -- or more accurately its lack of an agitator. Instead of relying on a center agitator, clothing in this machine is rocked by the moveable wash plate located in the bottom. The wash plate is the feature most responsible for the huge capacity of the machine. Removing the agitator opens up an incredible amount of space and makes it possible to wash even a king comforter in this machine with ease.
Stain removal has also been addressed by this new model from Whirlpool. Using a new feature called Direct Inject wash system, this model cuts down on the need for stain pretreatment. Instead of pre-treating, concentrated detergent is showered over clothing and worked into fabrics using the centrifugal force provided by the wash plate system.
The first of the top-loaders to employ "6th Sense", a sensor system, this washer, like many front-loaders, determines the wash time, water level and temperature and spin speeds based on the cycle selected. Never again will you need to explain, hot, cold, warm and gentle to kids learning to do laundry. They simply identify the load and the machine does the rest.
With 11 cycles and options, this model has features that are on par with other machines in this price range, although it does lack a delay timer. Five wash/rinse combinations are provided as well as four spin speeds. Maximum spin speed is over 1,000 rpm, ensuring excellent moisture removal. Add-on options allow you to add a soak, pre-wash, second rinse or an extra spin. Controls are electronic with a center knob.
Although the Whirlpool Cabrio top-loader is new and as yet unproven, it does offer an incredibly large capacity. It also loads conveniently from the top, is quiet and is among the most efficient of the top-load selections. The Whirlpool WTW6600S is offered in white, black and biscuit and can be paired with Whirlpool's matching laundry worksurface and vertical laundry tower for the ultimate in clutter-free convenience and storage.
