Westinghouse LVM-37w3 37-inch LCD monitor

Date Published: 4/18/08

The Westinghouse LVM-37w3 is a 37-inch LCD monitor that is HD-ready, and it boasts multiple inputs for connecting to an HD tuner and other digital sources. The large connection selection is important, as the LVM-37w3 doesn't have an integrated tuner. To watch television on this monitor, you will need a high-definition receiver or, for analog broadcasts, a VCR or other component with an integrated TV tuner, such as a DVD recorder.

The monitor is 4-7/10 inches deep, so it's a great candidate for wall mounting, although a separately available bracket is required. The monitor is an attractive silver, with a black frame surrounding the screen, and a silver stand is provided for use on a tabletop or counter. Control buttons are located along the left side, while all of the inputs and outputs are arrayed out of sight along the right side.

With a native resolution of 1,920X1,080 (progressive), the LVM-37w3's wide format is ideal for HD content and widescreen movies. Lower-resolution images are up-converted to progressive scan display for a more stable picture. Images appear crisp and detailed on this LCD TV, which has a 3-D digital comb filter to eliminate dot crawl.

The built-in stereo system is also impressive, with each speaker producing 15 watts of audio output. The LVM-37w3 has a full selection of PIP functions, although you will need a second video source (in addition to a first video source) to utilize them.

Given the lack of a tuner, the LVM-37w3 thankfully has a wide input/output selection, although it is relatively short on the number of low-resolution connections. It includes a composite video input, an S-video input, two component video inputs, two DVI inputs and an HDMI input, along with a PC input. The remote control does a fine job managing the TV's various functions, including the picture-in-picture features, and it has buttons to directly access the various components connected to the LVM-37w3.

Pros: Good connection selection, sharp 1,080p picture
Cons: No integrated TV or HDTV tuner
