Weslo Cadence C44

Date Published: 2/7/08

The Weslo Cadence C44 is a low-cost, low-quality treadmill that reinforces the theory that you get what you pay for. Parts and labor on this treadmill are covered by a mere 90 days warranty, which is never a good sign, for example. If you are a serious runner, the Weslo Cadence C44 will have you burning more calories in frustration than from a challenging workout; this is a treadmill suitable for walking or occasional very light jogging only.

A weak 1.3-continuous-duty-horsepower motor -- that is, somewhat surprisingly, covered by a 1-year warranty -- powers the C44. The motor delivers a top speed of 10mph, which is certainly sufficient for most home runners. Asking such a low-powered motor to regularly sustain operation at that speed, however, is unrealistic; it will just be a matter of time before the motor burns out. The C44 offers a choice of three different inclines, as well; unfortunately, these need to be adjusted manually by shutting off the treadmill, closing it and then resetting the incline, so don't plan on adjusting the incline mid- workout for interval training.

The 16X47-inch running surface is not sufficient to accommodate a long stride, which is another reason for passing on the C44 as a running treadmill. The Comfort Cell Cushioning reduces the impact on leg joints for walkers, and the oversize LCD console displays workout feedback, including speed, time, distance, calories and fat burned. The Cadence C44 also features a heart rate monitor that is activated by pressing your thumb to a sensor, but we find it so slow and wildly inaccurate at obtaining a reading as to make it worthless.

This is a compact device, with a footprint of 64X28 inches, and a weight of just 90 pounds. Unfortunately, when it comes to treadmills, lighter is not always better. Heavier treadmills tend to provide a more stable running surface, and we find that the C44 wobbles at higher speeds. The C44 does conveniently fold for easy storage, though.

If you are simply looking for a low-cost way to walk at home during bad weather or you just want to burn a few calories walking in front of the TV, the Weslo Cadence C44 may fulfill a need. This is, however, a low-quality home treadmill that is not suitable for anyone who is looking for a vigorous workout.

Pros: Inexpensive, compact, folds for storage
Cons: Weak motor, small running surface, poor-quality construction

Warranty
1 year, motor; 90 days, parts and labor
