Vizio VX32L 32-Inch LCD HDTV
Date Published: 7/20/07
For a 32-inch LCD HDTV that delivers the best bang for your buck, look no further than the Vizio VX32L. This unit delivers solid picture quality and plenty of connectivity options for a very reasonable price. There are a few cheaper units available, but the VX32L has a picture superior to any competing budget unit we've seen.
The native resolution of the VX32L is 1,366x768, which is sufficient to display 720p and 1080i HDTV content without scaling. Blacks appear deep for a LCD TV in this size and price range, and colors are generally accurate with good saturation. The only faults we can find with the picture are those commonly associated with many LCD TVs, namely some loss of detail in high-contrast scenes and washed-out colors when viewing the screen from too far off-center. In every other respect, the performance of the VX32L exceeds our expectations, delivering a bright, even picture.
The connectivity options of this 32-inch LCD HDTV are also impressive. There are two HDMI inputs, a combination composite video/S-video input, two component video inputs and a single RF input. Add an antenna to the latter, and the built in ATSC tuner decodes over-the-air HDTV channels. The included QAM tuner lets you receive unscrambled digital cable channels, but if you want to watch premium channels or interactive content like on-demand programming, you will need a cable box. The VX32L offers an optical digital audio output for routing to a home theater system and speakers, but the internal 10-watt-per-channel stereo speakers do a decent job in their own right. The speakers are not detachable, so whether or not you connect the VX32L to a surround sound system, the speakers remain.
With its VGA-style PC input, this Vizio unit can conveniently double as a crisp and clear computer monitor. The VX32L receives high marks, but the illuminated front-panel Vizio logo and black, white and silver color scheme may not appeal to everyone. The accompanying tabletop stand neatly matches the TV, and depending on your room's decor, this may or may not be a good thing. This stand can be removed, of course, and an optional bracket lets you mount the VX32L on the wall. The included remote control lacks backlighting, but the menu system is easy to navigate and offers a decent array of picture controls.
Among the convenience features offered on the VX32L are a basic PIP function, parental controls and a freeze frame mode. If you are in the market for a budget 32-inch LCD TV that doesn't sacrifice picture quality, the Vizio VX32L is a great buy.
Pros: Solid picture quality, good connectivity options, great as a PC monitor
Cons: Narrow viewing angle, unusual combination of colors in its design
