The VillaWare Power Cookie Press (model V5375) is a rechargeable cordless gadget that makes speedy work of everyday and holiday cookie baking. The package includes a molded power base/hand grip, a removable power cord, a clear dough tube, a pusher rod, 20 cookie-cutter discs and four funnels. The assembled Power Cookie Press holds about 2 cups of dough, which is enough to make about 20 cookies, and a fully charged unit can extrude up to 40 full tubes of dough.
The Power Cookie Press is easy to assemble and operate. Before first use, you need to charge the base with the included AC power cord for at least 2 hours, although overnight is recommended for a full charge. The clear dough tube twists onto the base, and you simply select a cutter disc and twist-lock it onto the end of the tube using a plastic ring nut.
This device comes with an array of discs for making various shapes, from hearts and flowers to stars, crosses and other designs. You can use the funnels for frosting cakes, decorating cookies with icing or piping filling into cream puffs or eclairs. The Power Cookie Press comes with a handy instruction booklet that has recipes for spritz cookies, peanut butter cookies, ginger snaps, cream puffs and more.
Suitable for left- or right-handed users, the Power Cookie Press dispenses cookie after cookie at whatever pace you set for it, although for best results, the dough should be soft and pliable with just a hint of stickiness. Simply position the Press above a cookie sheet, hold the button until enough dough has extruded and then release, then move the Press to repeat the process. The unit is well balanced and can stand on its end to free your hands between batches.
The Power Cookie Press features simple one-touch operation, and the lightweight handle has a slip-free grip. There is just one thumb-operated control to start and stop the extrusion process, which is relatively quiet despite the considerable strength of the motor.
One problem with the Power Cookie Press is that after extruding a tube of dough, some excess dough is left in the tube. To use the last bits of dough, you must twist the tube off the base and manually scrape out the dough and form the last cookie by hand.
The Power Cookie Press is also handy for piping frosting onto cakes, and it proves especially useful for making decorative edges. Cleanup is relatively simple, as all of the parts twist off the base. A special cleaning brush is included with the package.
Pros: Lightweight, cordless operation
Cons: Bits of dough remain inside the tube or can sneak out the sides of the ring nut
