Don't let the brand name fool you. While the box might say "US Digital," the DB-2010 HDTV tuner/receiver is actually an imported product from China--this over-the-air receiver is actually produced by Hisense. Still, the DV-2010 remains a good product at a reasonable price. The biggest complaint is that if something goes wrong, trying to get technical assistance or even taking advantage of the one-year warranty can become more than a minor issue.

The US Digital DB-2010 HDTV tuner/receiver supports HDTV output formats, including 1080i and 720p. HD content is delivered to an HD-ready TV via a single component video output. Additionally, this tuner/receiver can down-convert the high definition signal to standard definition for older analog sets via the composite and S-Video inputs. The box includes analog stereo RCA jacks for audio output, along with an S/PDIF digital optical audio output, but unfortunately no digital audio coaxial output. While there is no HDMI output, we really didn't expect to find one for a tuner/receiver in the price range.

We were pleased to find that the US Digital DB-2010 includes a USB slot for firmware upgrades via a flash drive. How often this will be available isn't known, but it is nice to know that the box has the potential to be upgraded if necessary. Another surprise considering the price range is not just the remote control with batteries, but composite, S-Video and even component cables included with the price. None of these are top of the line, and are probably the first thing you'll want to upgrade, but it's nice to get going right out of the box.

What isn't included--or for that matter really expected--is the external antenna. Unless you live especially close to a station's broadcast transmitter, you're likely going to need a full-size external antenna. Fortunately the US Digital DB-2010 is compatible with the small indoor HD antennas, and these can work reasonably well in suburban areas, but for the most part a large antenna is really all but required.

The US Digital DB-2010 is fully ATSC compliant and can receive 8VSB digital signals, and as expected, it will receive and support AC-3 (Dolby Digital) surround sound. Setting up the box isn't too difficult, but the manual was clearly written by someone who spoke English as a second language. Additionally, we were a little disappointed to find that this box lacks an on-screen set up guide. Despite these minor drawbacks this small silver box packs in a lot of HD power. Just remember that support is somewhat limited.
