Able to accommodate up to 10 handsets, this handsome system from Uniden is a cost-effective choice for large homes and small offices. Included with each package are a base station and two handsets, all of which have built-in speakerphones for hands-free communications and their own individual 100-number directories that can be transferred from one unit to another. Unfortunately, these same directories also must accommodate caller ID information--a definite drawback for people with large address books. As for reception, interference is minimized on calls by using the less trafficked 5.8GHz band, but for some reason call clarity is only so-so once you get to about 150 feet (and when a few walls of your home are involved). Fortunately, the NiMH batteries perform well with about 5 hours of talk time and 7 days of standby. Perhaps the most unique feature of this system, though, is that the handsets can be used without the base station as walkie-talkies. Other features include a 12-minute digital answering machine, speed dialing, conversation recording, an intercom, headset jacks, room monitoring, and call transfer. Overall, this is a very versatile system for a reasonably low price
