Troy-Bilt TB45E 4.5-amp electric string trimmer

Date Published: 7/21/08

Sure, you can find a bargain-basement, low-power electric string trimmer for as little as 20 bucks, but for just a few dollars more, you can move up to a brand-name, higher-power model with several notable features. At less than $45, the Troy-Bilt TB45E 4.5-amp trimmer is a good example -- a moderate-power tool that's going to provide everything you need to tackle small to medium trimming chores.

The 4.5-amp motor falls in the middle of electric trimmer offerings (we've seen them everywhere from under 2 amps to 7 amps and above), and provides plenty of power to zip through tall grass or light weeds. The trimmer uses a bump-and-feed line release, which is a fairly standard offering on mid-priced units and higher. You tap the head on the ground, and it releases more line. This model uses .065-inch dual line, among the thinnest -- and less durable -- on the market. Its large 15-inch cutting swath propels it past many similarly priced models, though, and allows you to trim more quickly than many of its smaller competitors.

The Troy-Bilt TB45E 4.5-amp electric string trimmer isn't as ergonomically advanced as some backyard tools, but it does have an adjustable D-handle, which lets you move it for a more comfortable grip, or switch between right- or left-handed use. One of this unit's standout features is the twist-and-edge function. You push a button, spin the trimmer head, and -- voila! -- it converts to an edger to cut a manicured edge on sidewalks or driveways or around landscaping elements. The guide-wheel is fairly small, though, and works best if you don't rest a lot of weight on it. Its position can also make it a little awkward to tackle close-in trimming jobs. We also wish the shaft could be adjusted more than just a few inches.

The Troy-Bilt TB45E 4.5-amp electric string trimmer is covered by a 2-year limited warranty.

Pros: Wide 15-inch cutting width, moderate price, versatility
Cons: Moderate power, fairly standard design

Warranty
2 years, limited
