Troy-Bilt Squall 521

Date Published: 10/1/07

Troy-Bilt's Squall 521 packs plenty of the features that our experts like to see into a single-stage snow blower.

We were thrilled to find this model ready to go, thanks to its 4-cycle engine. Like so many busy homeowners, our experts don't appreciate the mess and the extra time it takes to mix gas and oil for a 2-stroke. With the Squall 521, all you need is gasoline; pour it in and you're ready to tackle the most recent snowstorm.

We were also pleased with the fact that the Squall includes electric start as standard equipment. Pushing a simple button is far preferable to making repeated attempts at pull-starting a stubborn engine, especially in the cold.

The Squall features 21-inch clearing path and a 10-inch intake, which rivals that of any other machine in its class. Its speed of removal and controls are fair for its type, while its handling is excellent.

Consider this model for a one-car driveway or a two-car driveway that's not longer than three car lengths. This 5.5-hp machine thrives on light, fluffy snow and can clear a driveway of this stuff in no time.

The Troy-Bilt Squall 521 costs only a bit more than a basic single-stage blower and is an excellent value thanks to the convenience of its 4-cycle engine and handy electric start.

This unit is sold through Lowe's as model number 31AS2B5-711 and through independent retailers as 31AS2B5-766.

Pros: Standard equipment includes 4-cycle engine and electric start, large clearing path for its size, excellent handling
Cons: Can be slowed by heavy wet snow, speed of removal is fair

Warranty
2 years, limited
