Toshiba SD-V594 DVD/VCR Player With HDMI
Date Published: 1/9/08
The SD-V594 is an upper-end entry in Toshiba's extensive lineup of DVD/VCR combination players, and it offers a host of advanced features. This DivX home theater-certified model features an HDMI output, and when connected to a digital television via HDMI, it will up-convert standard DVD video (480p or 480i) to pseudo-high-definition 720p or 1,080i signals. This delivers a noticeably improved picture with potentially more than double the resolution provided by an ordinary progressive scan player.
As with most up-conversion players, the SD-V594 does not come with the required HDMI cable, which can be quite expensive (a 12-foot HDMI cable can easily cost $100). For analog TV users, the SD-V594 offers the traditional component video, composite video and S-video outputs. Dolby Digital and DTS surround signals can be passed to a home theater receiver via the optical and coaxial digital audio outputs. With the SD-V594's back-panel USB input, digital photo enthusiasts can view images directly from their camera.
The DVD side of the SD-V594 is compatible with a variety of formats, including DVD-R/RW, SVCD, VCD and CD-R/RW. It will also play discs loaded with WMA and MP3 digital audio files, and it can display JPEG picture slideshows. This unit offers all the DVD playback features you'd expect, including commercial skip, four fast-scan options, a digital picture zoom and multiple camera angles.
The VCR side of the SD-V594 offers four-head hi-fi playback for all your old VHS movies and archived TV recordings. It also has quasi-S-VHS playback, so you can play S-VHS tapes in standard VHS resolution. The VCR's functions include a 1-month/eight-event timer, an automatic clock set and a 30-second commercial skip function. The SD-V594 allows you to simultaneously play DVD while recording to VHS, and you can transfer non-copyrighted material from disc to tape. The plethora of useful features makes the SD-V594 a versatile DVD/VCR player at an attractive price.
