The SD-V594 is an upper-end entry in Toshiba's extensive lineup of DVD/VCR combination players, and it offers a host of advanced features. This DivX home theater-certified model features an HDMI output, and when connected to a digital television via HDMI, it will up-convert standard DVD video (480p or 480i) to pseudo-high-definition 720p or 1,080i signals. This delivers a noticeably improved picture with potentially more than double the resolution provided by an ordinary progressive scan player.

As with most up-conversion players, the SD-V594 does not come with the required HDMI cable, which can be quite expensive (a 12-foot HDMI cable can easily cost $100). For analog TV users, the SD-V594 offers the traditional component video, composite video and S-video outputs. Dolby Digital and DTS surround signals can be passed to a home theater receiver via the optical and coaxial digital audio outputs.
