Toshiba SD-P1800 portable DVD player

Date Published: 1/9/08

The SD-P1800 is a competitively priced portable DVD player from Toshiba. This model offers an impressive 8-inch TFT LCD with a 16:9 aspect ratio, so you can enjoy widescreen movies as they were meant to be watched. The screen flips and swivels up to 180 degrees, so whether you're watching in a car, on a plane, or just sitting with your feet up at home, you will always get the viewing angle just right.

The overall sturdy design of this portable DVD player is well preparted for frequent use. Unlike a lot of budget portables, the SD-P1800 feels solid enough to withstand the rigors of extensive traveling. It is also a lightweight device, even with the included battery attached. The rechargeable battery provides a lifespan of about 3.5 hours between charges. If you're using this portable DVD player in the car, you can save the battery and power the unit via the car power outlet adapter.

The SD-P1800 has twin headphone jacks so you can enjoy watching a movie with a friend or travel companion. Alternately, you can enjoy audio tracks or music CD via the unit's integrated stereo speakers. Virtual surround sound simulates multichannel audio over either the headphones or the twin speakers. However, as with many portable DVD players, the speaker volume level is merely acceptable rather than outstanding.

Picture quality is generally good. Images appear sharp and the colors well saturated. The SD-P1800's composite video connection enables you to connect the player to a television, so the unit can serve as a second home DVD player. Once connected to a TV, the SD-P1800 can route Dolby Digital and DTS surround signals through its coaxial digital audio output.

There is some noise present when a disc is first loaded, but once playback is under way, the SD-P1800 performs very well. The player is compatible with DVD-Video, DVD-R, VCD, audio CD, and CD-R/RW, including discs holding MP3 and WMA files. You can even create a digital slideshow from JPEG image CD or connect a digital camera or game console for use on the road. The package includes a basic remote control. The SD-P1800 is a feature-rich portable DVD player.
