Toshiba SD-P1600 portable DVD player
Date Published: 1/9/08
The SD-P1600 is the latest model in Toshiba's line of budget portable DVD players. With an MSRP of $200, the SD-P1600 represents an excellent value for the money, and it certainly isn't the usual bargain portable player.
It feels solid and well made, and it delivers a very satisfactory picture. The SD-P1600 comes complete with just about all the accessories you're likely to need to keep yourself and the kids entertained on the road or at home.
The SD-P1600 features a 7-inch wide-format TFT LCD display and a digital picture zoom to expand any selected area of the picture; the zoom can even be used to eliminate the black bars on the top and bottom of letterbox-only movies.
Picture quality is quite impressive for a portable model at this price point, although the SD-P1600 does not have progressive scan playback. In addition to DVD-Video, the player is compatible with DVD-R, VCD, standard audio CD, and CD-R/RW, including those loaded with MP3 and WMA digital music files. The SD-P1600 can even create a digital slideshow when loaded with JPEG picture CD.
Like the other budget Toshiba portables, the SD-P1600 features twin headphone jacks, which is always a handy feature for keeping two people entertained when sitting next to each other in the back of a car or in adjacent airplane seats. Toshiba has also included a 3-D virtual surround sound system to simulate 5.1 sound over the integrated twin speakers. While the overall audio quality using the headphones is good, the volume generated by the speakers is somewhat disappointing.
The SD-P1600 includes a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that offers up to 3 hours of continuous play. For viewing longer movies in the car, the player also comes with a DC vehicle power adapter.
The Toshiba SD-P1600 offers solid performance and all the features that you would expect in a well-made unit at a reasonable price.
