Toshiba SD-4980 up-conversion DVD player
Date Published: 5/13/08
The single-disc Toshiba SD-4980 is one of the least expensive DVD players to offer high-definition up-conversion. It is also compatible with DivX, giving the SD-4980 an exceptional feature set for a budget-price DVD player.
This unit is aimed at digital TV owners who want to get HD-quality performance from their existing DVD library. When connected to a digital TV via its HDMI output, the SD-4980 upgrades standard (480i) and progressive scan (480p) DVD to high-definition (720p or 1,080i) resolutions, so you can enjoy a picture with about double the resolution provided by ordinary progressive scan players. It should be noted, however, that the SD-4980 does not include an HDMI cable, so you will have to purchase it separately, and they are quite expensive.
As well as offering HD up-conversion, this versatile DVD player will also spin recordable CD encoded with MP3 and WMA digital audio files and JPEG images. In an unusual but welcome move, Toshiba has given the SD-4980 compatibility with MPEG4 and DivX video, making this player ideal for viewing internet-sourced content on your home theater system. Setting up the SD-4980 is a straightforward process, and the menus load quickly and are simple to follow.
For the millions of DVD fans with traditional analog televisions, the SD-4980 offers component video, S-video, and composite video outputs. The player can route Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound through its optical and coaxial digital audio outputs for connection to a full-feature home theater receiver. The SD-4980 also features a Virtual Surround Sound function that replicates five-channel audio over a twin stereo speaker setup, such as the speakers on a stereo TV. The Toshiba SD-4980 is an excellent-value DVD player that offers some advanced functionality for a budget price.
