Toshiba Regza 57LX177 57-inch LCD HDTV
Date Published: 11/5/07Just three years ago LCD was the technology of choice for flat panel HDTV sets that were 37-inches and smaller, while plasma dominated 42-inches and above. However, new developments have allowed manufacturers to introduce larger-sized LCD panels, and in many cases, LCD is the more affordable option. A 42-inch LCD TV can be found for prices that would have seemed impossible only a few short years ago--but if you are looking to step up n size more than that, you should still be prepared to pay the price.
For the money, the 57LX177 does offer a very good picture with lifelike colors. The PixelPure 3G 14-bit Internal Digital Video Processing clears up any annoying issues with "jaggies" and other digital artifacts, plus this model offers four dynamic contrast modes so you can make quick adjustments for the content you're watching. Specific adjustments to color levels, backlighting, contrast and brightness are also saved by input.
This is also a big set that you can use in a room with ambient light. LCD is already a better technology where you might not always have the best light conditions, and we liked that this set features a DynaLight Dynamic Back Light Control to help you further deal with varying brightness issues. This way you can watch TV without drawing the curtains. But while LCD is good for dealing with light, it has its own issues with black levels, and the Regza line is no exception. This set has improved from last year's models and the blacks are much deeper, but they're still not the deep, rich blacks that similar sized plasma sets can deliver.
We were impressed with the ClearFrame 120Hz Anti-Blur Technology, which reduces motion blur and increase the set's response time during fast-moving action sequences. This is especially welcome for video games and sporting events, both of which look very good on the Regza line.
As with the other models in the Regza line, we were quite impressed with the connection options with the Toshiba 57LX177. One complaint about last year's model was that it only had two HDMI inputs, but the company wisely added a third this year, which complement the two ColorStream HD component video inputs, rear S-video and A/V composite inputs, rear A/V composite, fixed stereo audio output and optical audio output, as well as an RF input for cable TV (phew). While a side HDMI input would have been more than welcome, we can't complain too much. Additionally, we liked that this model features a Theaterlink IR Pass Through, so that you can take control of other devices even if they're hidden away from view.
At 57-inches, even a flat panel set is going to look large in almost any room. The black and silver bezel casing of the 57LX177 presents a stylish appearance. This isn't the thinnest casing on a flat panel set, but it doesn't detract from the overall look of this very attractive set. The bottom-mounted sound strip speakers are barely noticeable from an aesthetic point of view, but for two twin speakers they do sound very good. These speakers support Dolby Digital (AC3) surround sound along with SRS WOW for that full room audio immersion. These are good for TV programming, but don't really compare to a home theater system for reproducing a rich cinematic experience.
Pros: Three HDMI inputs, two level mute, IR pass through
Cons: No side component or HDMI input, black levels not perfect, expensive
