The Toshiba RD-XS52 is three devices in one: a DVD recorder, a digital video recorder (DVR), and a DVD player. It is also one of the first DVD recorders to offer HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) compatibility for an uncompressed, digital-to-digital connection to a digital TV.

The RD-XS52 up-converts content to HDTV-comparable resolutions, producing a picture with about double the resolution provided by ordinary progressive scan DVD players.

The RD-XS52's integrated 160GB hard drive will store up to 200 hours of TV programming. This content can then be transferred to disc at a speed of up to 24X normal playback for DVD-R or 12X for DVD-RAM. The RD-XS52 also has TiVo-like features such as the ability to pause and replay live television or watch the beginning of a recording while the end is still being recorded.

As a DVD player, the RD-XS52 offers progressive scan output and all the playback features you're ever likely to need. An optical digital audio output lets multichannel DVD audio route to an A/V receiver.
