Toshiba HD-A2
Date Published: 6/27/07
The Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player is the entry-level unit in Toshiba's second generation of HD DVD players. When Toshiba launched its first generation HD-A1 we knew the price would come down in time, but a price reduction to below $400 for the HD-A2 coupled with the improvements made to both the unit's performance and design comes as a welcome surprise. We're still no closer to predicting the outcome of the format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray, but at this price bracket you'll be risking far less with an HD DVD player.
The HD DVD performance of this unit is excellent. Even compared to the top of the range Toshiba HD-XA2, the HD-A2 delivered superb image quality in 1080i mode. If you're looking for 1080p output, you'll need to step up to the more expensive model, but that very much depends on the TV you own. With most HDTVs, the difference in picture quality will be negligible. As well as delivering a sharper, more detailed picture, the HD-A2 also offers superior audio performance. The player provides onboard decoding for Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby True HD. HD DVD discs also offer greater interactivity than standard DVDs. You can, for example, access menu functions such as director's commentary while the DVD is playing without having to navigate to the menu.
As well as playing HD DVDs, the HD-A2 does a solid job at up-converting standard DVDs to the higher resolution so you can enjoy your existing DVD library with improved image quality. Compared to the first generation HD-A1, the HD-A2 is positively slim-line. The design of this unit is far less bulky, far more in keeping with the other high end components in your entertainment system. Toshiba has also redesigned the accompanying remote control, which features "glow keys" and is far more user friendly. While the disc loading time on the HD-A2 still isn't as quick as you would expect on a standard definition player, the 28 seconds is a substantial improvement on the first generation HD DVD player.
Despite the uncertainty over the format war, the Toshiba HD-A2 offers excellent value for a HD DVD player capable of delivering excellent picture and audio performance.
Pros: Very affordable HD DVD format player, stunning picture quality, offers HDMI upscaling, sleeker design than the first generation player
Cons: Few beyond the uncertainty of the format, lacks some advanced features such as 1080p output, multichannel analog outputs and RS-232 port
