Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player

As you might expect from a first-generation HD DVD player, there are some minor flaws on the Toshiba HD-A1. Nevertheless, the stunning picture quality and wide array of connectivity options make this a superior single-disc DVD player.
It is impossible to predict whether HD DVD or Blu-ray will prevail in the next-generation digital video player wars, but HD DVD offers some obvious advantages over standard DVD. The picture quality is sharper and more detailed, and the audio performance noticeably richer. HD DVD also include standard DVD audio and video tracks on the same disc, enabling you to experience greater interactivity. For example, while the HD DVD movie track is playing, you can access functions such as the director's commentary without having to navigate through the menu.
As a DVD player, the HD-A1 serves the new format well. It is backward-compatible with all of your standard DVD and CD, including DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW and DVD-RAM. It can also play MP3 and WMA files burned to disc. In addition, the HD-A1 offers DVD up-conversion via its HDMI output, so when it is connected to a compatible TV, you can watch your standard DVD at pseudo-HD resolutions.
As well as Dolby Digital and DTS, the HD-A1 has multichannel decoders for Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD, and it is compatible with Dolby True HD. This audio can then be routed to a home theater receiver via the optical and coaxial digital audio outputs. A USB connection on the front panel allows you to quickly connect a compatible digital camera, MP3 player, or external hard drive in order to view JPEG or play digital music files. The Ethernet port on the rear of the HD-A1 provides a broadband internet connection for downloading updates and other content.
The HD-A1 is larger than a standard single-disc DVD player, the discs load slower, and of course the price is higher. Despite all that, the Toshiba HD-A1 is a feature-rich HD DVD player that delivers awesome picture and sound quality.
Pros: First player compatible with the new HD DVD format, stunning picture quality, HDMI up-conversion
Cons: Slow load times, unit may be too large for some home theater setups
