Toshiba D-VR5 VCR/DVD Recorder

Date Published: 1/9/08

The Toshiba D-VR5 is more than your run-of-the-mill DVD recorder. With an integrated VCR, this unit makes it simple to transfer all of your old home-recorded VHS tapes to more durable DVD-R/RW and DVD-RAM. In addition, the D-VR5 offers the benefits of an HDMI connection, including the ability to up-convert standard DVD content to high-definition resolutions. Unfortunately, the D-VR5's impressive DVD performance is diminished by its lackluster VCR playback.

With the HDMI connection, all audio and video signals from the D-VR5 (both DVD and VCR) can travel through one cable. When linked to a compatible digital TV, DVD content can be upscaled from the standard DVD resolutions of 480i and 480p to high-definition- 720p and 1,080i. This doesn't add any extra detail to the original video, but it results in a significantly clearer picture that can only be topped by the next-generation HD DVD and Blu-ray machines.

The DVD side of the D-VR5 can play a variety of disc formats, such as DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM, CD and CD-R/RW, including discs loaded with MP3, WMA and JPEG files. The unit can also handle DivX video, so you can watch internet-sourced content on your TV.

In addition to the DVD player and recorder, the D-VR5 has a full-feature VCR that includes all the playback functions you would hope to find. However, VHS playback quality is less than impressive and is comparable to that produced by a standalone budget VCR.

While the Toshiba D-VR5 performs well as a DVD recorder and player, the quality of VHS playback is disappointing.

Pros:  Versatile DVD recorder and VCR in one space-saving device, DivX compatible, HDMI connection
Cons:  Disappointing VHS playback quality

Warranty
90 days labor, 1 year parts
