Toshiba D-VR4 VCR/DVD recorder
Date Published: 3/26/08
The Toshiba D-VR4 is an updated version of the D-VR3, with a sleeker all-silver finish and a reduced MSRP of $300. Like the D-VR3, the D-VR4 is not just a DVD recorder and progressive scan DVD player, but it incorporates a four-head hi-fi VCR as well. The multiformat platform offers great convenience in one space-saving device.
The DVD recorder side of the D-VR4 can record to DVD-RAM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW, but not any DVD+ formats. The recorder offers a cable-compatible tuner and a Chase Play feature so shows being recorded to DVD-RAM can be watched from the beginning while the recording is still in progress. The D-VR4 is very handy for transferring content between DVD and VHS tapes, making it easy to share older home movies with family and friends.
As a DVD player, the D-VR4's progressive scan output produces superior image quality when connected to a digital TV, and its slew of alternate outputs makes it compatible with most standard analog TVs as well. The player is compatible with DVD-Video, DVD-RAM/R/RW, VCD, CD, CD-R/RW, and MP3, and it can create a slideshow when loaded with discs containing JPEG images. A capable universal remote rounds out the package. The D-VR4 is a very functional DVD recorder that does so much more.
