Toshiba 65HM167 65-inch 1080p DLP Television Set

The Toshiba 65HM167 is a solid set at a reasonable price. As a basic yet functional 65-inch HDTV, it uses DLP projection technology and offers a bright picture that serves well as the focal point in a basic home theater setup. While this is a 1080p set, we felt that it does not have the "pop" visually that many other sets offer, but it is still a good picture for the price.
A thin black bezel surrounds the 65-inch widescreen, and this makes for a nice, clean, but fairly nondescript design. From the front, very little of the somewhat massive casing can be seen, and the 65HM167 is still sleek enough (for a set of this size) that it doesn't look too overwhelming. This 1080p full HD display features the TALEN (Toshiba Advanced Light Engine), and a 3-D Y/C digital comb filter to clear up most interference, while the PixelPure 3G Internal Digital Video Processing addresses issues of "jaggies" or other digital artifacts.
This Toshiba set utilizes four dynamic contrast modes so you can make quick adjustments depending on the content you're watching, along with color temperature settings. Films can be optimized for TV viewing in the special cinema mode, and there are five different aspect ratio settings, including "full-screen" square TV along with different options for widescreen movies. Additionally, the 65HM167 features a dedicated game mode to help reduce motion blur and increase the response time during fast-moving action sequences.
Below the screen are mounted the twin satellite speakers, which support Dolby Digital (AC3) Surround Sound and SRS WOW to simulate the full-room experience. While the set cannot compare to a home theater multi-channel surround sound system, the twin 10-watt speakers are tolerable for TV shows and other programming. There are numerous audio settings, which can be adjusted to meet your needs, but with a set this size it is recommend that it is connected to a home theater receiver to get the full the cinematic experience
We were impressed that the Toshiba 65HM167 is about connectivity, and can communicate with just about anything you care to hook up to. This model offers a total of three HDMI inputs, as well as two ColorStream HD component video inputs, side S-video and A/V composite inputs; rear A/V composite, fixed stereo audio output and digital audio optical output, as well as an RF input for cable TV. To keep all this straight, you can use the system's universal remote, which we found worked well with up to four external devices. This comes up a tad short considering the plethora of A/V options and components today, but it should be adequate to get you started.
The Toshiba 65HM167 is a decent set at a very reasonable price, especially for the larger screen size. If you're looking for a big picture, this HD 65-inch widescreen 1080p set will serve well as the centerpiece for a mid-priced home theater.
Pros: Three HDMI inputs, great price, game mode
Cons: Fairly deep, average features, limited options with the remote control.
