Toshiba 56HM66 56-Inch DLP HDTV
Date Published: 10/26/07
The Toshiba 56HM66 is a relatively basic yet very functional 56-inch HDTV that uses DLP projection technology to present a bright but unremarkable high-definition picture. With a CableCARD slot and an integrated QAM tuner, the 56HM66 is digital cable-ready, and it would serve well as the centerpiece of a low-cost home theater system.
A thin silver bezel surrounds the wide-format antiglare screen, which displays all content at 720p. High-speed video processing and video noise reduction team with a 3-D Y/C digital comb filter to eliminate most interference, and you can choose among three color temperature settings and five picture modes. Film can be optimized for TV viewing by switching to cinema mode, which adjusts the picture using 3:2 pulldown conversion.
Compact stereo speakers are located below the screen, and they produce a disappointing 20 watts of total audio output. Volume leveling, expanded bass, enhanced treble and simulated surround sound can be activated to shape the audio to your preferences, but it is recommended that the 56HM66 be connected to a home theater receiver for a proper audio experience.
A channel browser displays a thumbnail image of the five channels most recently viewed, making for easy surfing. The favorites menu can store up to 32 channels, and you can browse these as well. Other convenience features include memory for the audio and video settings for each input, channel and video input labeling, an adjustable sleep timer, a two-level mute and parental V-chip controls. A notable omission on the 56HM66's is PIP, a feature that is generally found on comparable models.
In addition to a side-panel composite video/S-video input, the rear of the 56HM66 offers an acceptable collection of inputs and outputs. This includes two RF inputs, an additional composite video/S-video input, two HD component video inputs, two HDMI inputs, an optical digital audio output, the CableCARD slot and a composite video output. This set can even be networked with your PC, so you can access music and photo files for play over the 56HM66's screen and sound system.
