Toshiba's 46HM94 is a 46-inch DLP (digital light processing) projection TV with an integrated HDTV tuner and a slim tabletop design. Framed in gray, the flat screen is flanked by silver speakers and sits above a small base that includes control buttons and easy-access audio/video inputs. A memory card slot is integrated into the front panel for the easy viewing of JPEG images from a digital camera.

Resolution is 720p (1,280X720), with excellent contrast and sharpness whether viewing standard or HD content (an external HD receiver is required for viewing HD programming). The picture is enhanced by velocity scan modulation, digital noise reduction, and a 3-D Y/C digital comb filter. The color can be set to warm, medium, or cool, making adjustments quick and easy. Movies are adapted to the TV screen with 3:2 pulldown conversion, ensuring that the original appearance of the movie is retained. The internal sound system relies on twin stereo speakers producing 20 watts of audio each, and it can be set to simulate surround sound and boost bass tones. Automatic volume leveling ensures that the audio level remains steady whether changing channels or viewing commercials.

Some of the handy features included in the 46HM94 are an interactive program guide (TV Guide On Screen) that assists in channel navigation, day and night modes for quick picture adjustments, memory for video settings for each input, favorite channel memory for two sets of nine channels, and dual-tuner picture-out-of-picture options. The POP function works with HD and standard content, and the POP window can be resized as needed.

The rear panel has a range of connection options, with three audio/video inputs, three S-video inputs, two RF inputs, two component video inputs, and an HDMI interface for a DVD player or other digital source. A fixed/variable audio output allows the connection of external speakers, which can then be controlled through the 46HM94. The universal remote control will manage up to six associated components, and they can be controlled even when out of sight in a cabinet.
