The 34HFX84 is a 34-inch widescreen member of Toshiba's Cinema Series, boasting a handsome silver and black cabinet, an HDMI input, and high-definition capability. The compact cabinet has stereo speakers placed below the flat picture tube, along with front-panel audio/video and S-video inputs and easy-access controls. All signals are up-converted to 1,080i unless 540p is selected as the display preference, and there are five picture format options for viewing non-widescreen content. The picture looks impressively sharp and clear on this TV, assisted by a 3-D Y/C digital comb filter, contour correction, selectable velocity scan modulation, wideband video amplifier, and digital noise reduction. Four picture presets allow quick adjustment of contrast, brightness, tint, sharpness, and color temperature. The speakers do an admirable job of presenting lifelike sound, with the option of enhancing bass tones. SRS WOW creates a 3-D audio experience, and volume can be automatically kept within a reasonable range by turning on the StableSound feature. The 34HFX84 is equipped with dual tuners and picture-out-of-picture functions. The screen can be split into two full-height images, with audio coming from either side, and there is the option of freezing the action into a split-screen window. Twelve channels can be viewed at once, either from the full selection of channels or from saved favorites. Among the convenience features on this model are a two-level mute, a channel memory button, channel and input labeling, on and sleep timers, and parental controls. The rear inputs are generous, with an HDMI input, two S-video inputs, two HD component video inputs, and two audio/video inputs, providing plenty of options for connecting a range of components. A fixed/variable audio output makes the use of external speakers convenient. The universal remote control can be illuminated for night use, and it is capable of handling up to six devices including a DVD player, cable or satellite receiver, VCR, and two audio components.
