Toshiba's superb 34HF85 is a wide-format 34-inch TV with high-definition capability. The silver and gray cabinet has a compact, streamlined design, with stereo speakers and audio/video/S-video inputs tucked in below the screen. All content can be displayed at 1,080i, with the option of switching to 540p when desired. The picture is crisp and highly detailed, and it is ably assisted by digital noise reduction, a 3-D digital comb filter, black level expansion, wideband video amplification, and adjustable velocity scan modulation. Five picture modes are available, and film content can be adjusted for viewing through 3:2 pulldown conversion.

The stereo speakers produce a total of 10 watts of audio output, with volume leveling to keep commercials at a level steady with the programming volume. Other convenience features include movie and sports modes, memory for the audio and video settings for each input, and input and channel labeling.

Connections to an HD receiver and other components are easy considering the range of inputs on the rear panel, which include a pair of S-video inputs, two audio/video inputs, two HD component video inputs, an HDMI digital-to-digital interface, and a fixed audio/video output. The illuminated remote control is a universal model that can handle the 34HF85 and up to four components with ease.
