Toshiba 32D46 32-inch digital TV
Date Published: 8/25/06
One of the least expensive 32-inch TVs with an integrated digital tuner is the Toshiba 32D46, a traditional CRT model with an old-style curved picture tube. The silver cabinet is very compact, with twin stereo speakers located below the screen, along with a set of composite video inputs and a line of control buttons.
In anticipation of the switch from analog to all-digital broadcasting (tentatively scheduled for February 2009), the 32D46 is compatible with both analog and digital signals. Keep in mind that digital television (DTV) does not necessarily mean HDTV, as all HDTV is DTV, but not all DTV is HDTV. After the transition, basic 480i content will be broadcasted in the digital domain, but with no enhancement of resolution. The 32D46 displays all types of content at 480i, so it is not an HDTV.
A 3-line digital comb filter reduces dot crawl and enhances sharpness on the high-contrast screen. The stereo audio system is adequate but not spectacular, but it does include options such as simulated surround sound and automatic volume leveling.
The rear of the 32D46 has a limited collection of connectivity options, with two additional composite video inputs, an S-video input and a set of component video inputs, as well as a fixed audio output. The remote control is not a universal model, but it does have glowing buttons that come in handy at night. The Toshiba 32D46 offers DTV compatibility at an excellent price.
Pros: Digital tuner, low price
Cons: Basic features and connection options

1 year parts and labor, 2 years picture tube
