The 30HFX85 is a 30-inch CRT HDTV from Toshiba's Cinema Series, and it features a wide-format screen and an integrated NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuner. A black frame sets off the flat picture tube, while the silver cabinet blends well with other components. The design is compact, with twin stereo speakers built into the base of this TV.

Cinema Series models are known for their excellent image quality, and the 30HFX85 is no exception. The high-definition picture is enhanced by velocity scan modulation, and motion in movies is smoothed by 3:2 pulldown conversion. A 3-D Y/C digital comb filter eliminates interference from content supplied via the RF and composite video inputs.

The stereo speakers produce a total of 20 watts of output, and the 30HFX85 offers audio options such as automatic volume leveling and simulated surround sound. The audio and video settings for each input are saved in memory, and the 30HFX85 also has a favorite channel list, channel and input labeling and a selection of sleep, on/off and game/input timers.

To accommodate just about any combination of components you might like to connect, the 30HFX85 sports a front-panel composite video/S-video input and rear-panel composite video/S-video, component video, HDMI and RF inputs. There is also a composite video output. The included multibrand remote is user-friendly, with illuminated buttons that make it easy to manage in the dark. While the price is a bit higher than we would like, you would be wise to consider the Toshiba 30HFX85's fine features and performance.
