The 30HFX84, a 30-inch Cinema Series TV from Toshiba, is a beautifully designed model that is HD-ready and compact enough to fit into a tight cabinet or tabletop space. The wide-format flat picture tube delivers a sharp, bright picture that is framed by a black bezel and set into a silver cabinet. Stereo speakers are located below the screen, ensuring a small footprint.

Progressive scan signals can be displayed at 540p, while standard interlaced signals are up-converted to 1,080i, so that even without an HD receiver, the picture achieves near-HD quality. Film content can be adapted using 3:2 pulldown conversion to eliminate uneven action, and a 4MB 10-bit 3-D Y/C digital comb filter eliminates video noise on pictures arriving through the RF and A/V inputs. Standard-format content can be formatted for the wide screen in up to five ways, and a choice of four picture presets adds to the 30HFX84's flexibility.

The internal speakers produce a total of 20 watts of audio output, and they can be configured to simulate surround sound. The volume can be automatically maintained at a steady level to eliminate sudden bursts from commercials. Other convenience features include an adjustable sleep timer, memory for two sets of nine favorite channels, and a channel return button that will lock onto a favorite channel and return to it after surfing.

The front panel has audio/video and S-video inputs for the quick connection of a camcorder or other occasionally used device.
