The Toshiba 27AF45 is a 27-inch TV that would make an excellent secondary set, but it has the features and performance to serve equally well as the primary TV in a household. The flat picture tube is housed in a silver and gray cabinet, with doors below the screen concealing front-panel composite video inputs, a headphone jack, and control buttons. Stereo speakers are located on either side of the screen, creating good audio separation.

A 3-line digital comb filter reduces dot crawl and rainbow effects, and the contrast and sharpness are further enhanced by advanced velocity scan modulation. Wide-format content can be fitted to the 27AF45's standard-format screen in letterbox or compression mode. The double-baffle speakers produce a total of 10 watts of audio output, which can be set to simulate surround sound and to maintain a steady volume level.

Convenience features include memory for favorite channels, channel and video labeling, an adjustable sleep timer, and parental controls to limit access to particular channels, programs with inappropriate ratings, or time periods. Several components can be connected to the 27AF45 using the rear composite video, S-video, and component video inputs, as well as the composite video output. The universal remote control has illuminated buttons and four direct-access buttons for activating other components.
