Toshiba's 26HF84 is a 26-inch widescreen TV with a number of advanced features that make it an ideal candidate to serve as the center of a home theater system. The flat-tube screen is contained in a silver and gray cabinet, with a compact design that will fit into some tight spaces. Controls and easy-access inputs are located below the screen as well.

This TV is HD-ready, and all signals are up-converted to 1,080i (540p can be selected for the display of progressive scan DVD content). Images are clear and bright, with little distortion or glare evident. A 3-D Y/C digital comb filter ensures few hanging dots or rainbow effects, and black areas are rich with strong contrast. Movies are adapted to the screen with 3:2 pulldown conversion, so the action is always smooth.

The below-the-screen stereo speakers are rated at 5 watts per channel, and the audio includes enhanced bass, clear voice tones, and simulated surround sound. Among the convenience features built into the 26HF84 are video and channel labeling, memory for two sets of nine favorite channels, and memory for audio/video settings for each of the inputs.

Numerous components can be accommodated using the range of input jacks on the front and rear panels, which include three audio/video inputs, three S-video inputs, one RF input, two component video inputs, and one HDMI interface. The universal remote control can quickly switch between the TV and three other components, and the buttons are laid out in a comfortable arrangement.
